Problems with YouTube
Since we upgraded to BorderManager 3.9 in July we've twice had problems
with accessing YouTube.com through the proxy. The first problem was
when going to the site one day the page was just garbled. I traced that
to BM not being able to deliver a couple of CSS files for the site.
They seemed to be corrupted somehow. Rebooting the server fixed that
problem. Today we have a new issue. When trying to view any video we
get the message "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old
version of Adobe's Flash Player." Neither of those is the case. If I
bypass the proxy I'm able to view YouTube videos just fine.
I've used most of the settings from Craig Johnson's proxy.cfg file. Is
there anything unusual about YouTube that requires special settings? If
I just tell BM not to cache the site will that increase my bandwidth
usage, or are the videos uncachable anyway? Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Problems with YouTube
Did you change any of the default settings for the proxy related to
javascript? This would be in the iManager configuration for proxy.

Thanks for your reply. I wouldn't have intentionally changed any
settings mentioning Javascript in iManager. I can't even find any right
now under Proxy Services. I checked Application Proxy-HTTP,
General-Caching, and a few other sections that didn't seem like they
would apply. The closest thing I found was a setting for Java applet
stripping, which I know is unrelated. If you can tell me where it is
I'll be happy to look.

Re: Problems with YouTube
On the same iManager menu as the java applet stripping, do you have the
persistent connections options enabled? (I leave that menu at the
default values).
Also, why not try ALL the settings in the proxy.cfg file? (Just copy
it over intact). You can always save your current file.
I'd test with unload proxy, load proxy -cc to clear cache, in case you
have something old in cache causing an issue. Try the easy stuff
first. Clear browser cache as well.
I'm checking out a Youtube video right now through BM 3.9sp1 and
Firefox 3.1 - no problem here.

Persistent connections to browsers and origin servers are both enabled.

There were a few settings that for one reason or another I thought were
not right for us, either because they weren't applicable or perhaps
because they were something we just didn't want. I'm actually using
almost all of your proxy.cfg settings - many more than on our old 3.8
server. I'll look at your file again, recheck the differences, and see
if I can find an opportunity to apply. We're rather restricted here as
to when we can do such work, so it might not happen for a while.

The problem here is actually rather rare. Most days YouTube works just
fine.
Whatever is going on here is very strange. Here's what's happening now
- maybe it will tell you something. I clear my browser cache and go to
YouTube. The page is garbled, apparently missing a style sheet. I
refresh the browser, then the page is fine. But if I clear the browser
cache and go to the site again, it reverts to the garbled state. When
the page appears correctly the videos will play just fine (for now).

Http 1.1 through proxy not set on the browser?
(Tested with Firefox 3.1 as well as IE, and perhaps Safari, Chrome, etc?)

Jim,
We have seen this message here. We are running BMgr 3.9 and Firefox
3. In Firefox, holding the shift key while hitting page reload will
display the proper page. Also, unloading proxy and reloading with the
clear cache option solves it. I haven't had time to figure out the
cause.

i've got the same error with chrome without bm in the middle. It looks
an issue in their side.

HTTP 1.1 through proxy is set on all of our browsers as far as I know.

The garbled page problem occurs in IE 7, Firefox 3, and SeaMonkey 1.1.11.

It's good to know that we're not alone. I've done a little testing with
shift-reload in our district's standard browser, SeaMonkey, and it seems
to work. I'll ask our teachers to try that as a workaround until we may
find a more permanent solution. Thanks.
