BM on Vmware
I have been upgrading our old physical servers and turning them into fresh
from scratch BM 3.9sp1 VM's on ESX 3.5 and it seems that every time I end up
running into problems with Windows Updates and even some Java updates. Not
immediately but soon after the install most Windows updates start to fail.
I am wondering if there is some kind of incompatibility with the vmdk
volumes. I am using the recommended traditional file system on the cache
volumes etc as per TID's and Craig's very helpful book.
Anyone else had issues with Vmware setups?
Thanks
Darcy

Hi Darcy,
I have used esx as a bm39 test bed (and as a backup) and have the same
problems as I have with a physical bm.
Windows updates sometimes fail,
one: can't download updates, proxy -cc fixes this
two: can't genuine check, need to check using ie and not the download.
I have java updates turned off and use zen to prompt a version update
if I feel this is needed. (same for adobe reader).
Don't let people tell you it is a vmware problem, the os thinks it is
on bare metal hardware so treat it as so until you have explorered all
of the possibilities.

What windows updates? Automatic, or through the browser?
But in general, I agree with Breezer here. In my experience, windows
update through BM plain doesn't work and never did, and that isn't
dependant if it's a VM or not. I know there are people that claim it
works, but I have yet to see a single BM that has it working
consistantly *through the proxy*. I also agree that you should use WSUS
(which can download through proxy just fine).

Yes, through the browser.
Thanks everyone for the input, I will look at setting up a WSUS server for
the network, hopefully not terribly involved setup on that.
Maybe the updates just happened to work more reliably on 3.6 & 3.7, so I
noticed it now with 3.9.

The ones at my office due. I constantly have my PC there getting
windows updates. I finally had to set it up not to automatically apply
them and reboot as it created havoc for my remote control setup.
It does seem to work slower though...
I have to use the proxycfg -U command on the PC to get things working.
