I take it you are trying to log into eDirectory from a Linux client
using Novell Client for Linux?
This could be a name-resolution issue with SLP. Normally a client will
multicast for SLP information when the client starts up, and it should
find local servers that way.
If this is just a name resolution method, you should be able to put in
the IP address of a server (for both tree and server), and browse to
the context. That would indicate you have an SLP issue, but the client
can actually get to the servers (with NCP on TCP port 524) and log in.
If you have the client on a different subnet from the servers, you may
need an SLP Directory Agent to help the client resolve names. This
would be best pushed to the client via DHCP.
