Default File-Pick dialogue has ringers in it

Pardon the WP ignorance - I don't have WP loaded at the moment, and I'm only
an occasional user. I'm trying to find a solution for a friend.

o 3-machine peer LAN, XPSP3, WP12 retail. Most everything shared R/W. No
mapped drives.

o The slightly custom WP file-pick (open) window (what would be the F5 screen
in WPDOS) shows, on each machine, many ancient aliases for shares on the other
machines. Some have (1) or (2) appended. The bad ones fail silently when
double-clicked. The list is so cluttered that you can't find the good ones.
You can, however, browse through the folder tree on the other machine, and
open the file fine. Startup dir unknown, until I get over there.

o File associations are fine, and you can browse in Explorer, where
doubleclicks work. No spurious "places" exist in Win Explorer's Network
Places. All shares that should appear, do appear. Everyone's an admin
(ouch).

o Any idea what's going on? How do you get desired aliases onto WP's pick
list? How do you clear bogus entries?

All these are entirely Windows issues. WP's File|Open Dialog merely shows
you what Windows reports to WP. If you fix things so that Windows Explorer
shows (only) what you wish, then WP will show what you wish.

You can delete the no longer existent folders on other machines in the
local machine's windows explorer, and they're gone.

Thanks, all.

So I've been confused by my knowledge of the way the ancient WPDOS did it?
It's just a mirror of the Windows fileopen dialogue, with extra buttons on
top? It looked much more complete, on cursory (and ignorant, and only five
seconds) inspection - and didn't have the usual useless favorite buttons on
the left.

The user says the ringers do NOT appear in Explorer. I'll check on his
veracity when next I visit (g).

It is, as the Settings Dialog terms it, Enhanced.

Indeed.

That would be inexplicable. Maybe Explorer and WP|File|Open start in different
places.
