Default Corrupted cross references and quick rebuild

I have been browsing through past posts related to the problems with
corrupted cross references in publications. Apparently, the only valid
solution is a quick rebuild of the publication. I would like to know if
this is the "state of art" in that matter or anyone has an alternative
approach to this issue.
By the way: Gabor mentioned in a past post a template way to do a quick
rebuild, referring to the FAQ. But the FAQ doesn't mention that way at all.
What does it consist of?

Either using File > New from Template and letting Ventura create a new
version of the old publication (this is not a mere copy, it will
recreate it completely) or opening both the old and a new publications
at the same time, importing the old style sheet into the new one, and
dragging-and-dropping all chapters from the old into the new. However,
some TOC and similar settings, I no longer recall all details, are not
transferred with the second approach. Bob (or somebody else?) created
a script to bridge this gap but even then, I guess, the first solution
would be far simpler and faster.

Bye,
Gabor
