Connecting to gmail
Attempts to connect to gmail using Thunderbird 2.0.0.17 return a message
that "Connection to server imap.gmail.com timed out." I have no trouble
with any other mail client, although gmail does use other ports.
Perhaps i need proxy rules for those ports? If so, does anyone have
them? Any ideas what's wrong or how to troubleshoot it? NW 6.5.6
server running BM 3.8.4.

Re: Connecting to gmail
Are you sure that Thunderbird is using the proxy?
What happens if you unload IPFLT for a test?

Re: Connecting to gmail
Craig,
Thunderbird uses your proxy.pac. Should I unload ipflt and try to
connect to gmail anyway? If so, is it just unload ipflt, then load
ipflt afterward?

If you unload IPFLT, you will not have filtering. Yes, you can just
reload it later when done with the test.

Re: Connecting to gmail
Craig,
I connected immediately upon unloading ipflt. Next step I assume is to
write proxy exceptions? Suggestions?

I don't use Gmail, or Thunderbird, though I use a variant of Thunderbird
(Eudora Thunderbird project). I thought Gmail was for http mail. I
thought Thunderbird was for POP3 mail. Sounds like you have POP3 going on
- especially if you have to put in POP3 and SMTP server settings in
T-bird.
Assuming you need POP3/SMTP, like a non-http mail system typically does,
you'll need to have working DNS, POP3 and SMTP. This could mean that you
need three stateful filter exceptions from private to public (dns/udp-st,
pop3-st, smtp-st), though you may already have DNS covered with an
internal DNS server or proxy.
