Default Changing default screen sizes?

Hi there!

Within VMware there it is just possible to activate screen sizes like
800x600 or 1024x748.

I am searching for a way to change it ... possibly to 910x700 ... to view a
full Win98 window within my 1024x768 Linux desktop.

Do you know ways to change it? Maybe by tweaking the virtual Win98 with
some software ... but I still didn't find any.

Can you help me?

CU,
Meszi.

In Windows 98, in the Control Panel, look for the Display tool and select
it. Under Settings in the Display tool, you will see the screen size
selector. Select 800x600 and OK until you have finished. I think you can
even right click on the desktop, select Properties, and land right in the
Display tool.

BTW, I am much happier with a full window at 800x600 for my Windows 98 VM
and you probably will be too.

Hope that helps. ... John Hurst

Hi Meszi!

If you're familiar with registry editors like "C:\windows\regedit.exe"
you can change the screen size easily.

Under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Display\...
you'll find your installed displays named ...\0000\..., ...\0001\... etc.
The key corresponding to your "VMware SVGA II" is the right one. Maybe
an older installation left an additional entry so you may need to try
these alternatives.

On my system I find ...\0000\MODES\... and then by bpp color depth
....\32\..., ...\24\..., etc. the screen sizes as empty keys in the
format ...\1024,768 and so on. You can add another key named "910,700"
under your preferred colour depth key.

After closing the regedit.exe you should be able to select the new entry.

To make the search easier you can use regedits search function on
"vmx_svga" and proceed this search until the regedit tree shows this
"...\Display\000?\..." part where you only have to open the subtree and
add the key in the place decribed above.

What I did in short?: I added
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Display\0000\MODES\16\1374,939
and it works.

Please, keep in mind some people say editing the registry is dangerous
and you may want to make a backup before.

Best wishes,

Manuel

Also, if you want the actual resolution 910x700, you can try to change the
vmx_svga.inf file in Program Files\VMware\drivers to add the mode. Then
uninstall and re-install the VMware tools. Might work. See the thread
Strange Resolution in the Linux guest newsgroup from Jan. 2001. I used this
technique to change to 800x599 resolution on a ThinkPad 240X. ... John
